Bobby
Mills
In Residence
8–12 May 2019
Bobby Mills is a self-taught woodworker based in the South Downs National Park. Blending both traditional and modern techniques, Mills creates wooden pieces that are entirely made by hand using a traditional woodturning lathe.
Every piece begins with wood that is locally and sustainably sourced from conservation projects or windfall from one of the UK’s ancient woodlands, which lends the wood a unique character as a result of the weather conditions to which it is exposed; sweeping changes in the seasons and Atlantic winds encourage trees to grow with unusual forms instead of in ways that are predictable or consistent. He works intuitively and looks to engage with the natural lines and structures within the wood, whether it be in creating a vessel, stool or chair.
Mills’ training came from restoring and fixing buildings with his father in West Sussex where he learned to understand materials and tools by working with his hands. His designs are also inspired by his mother’s Danish heritage and the everyday Scandinavian objects he grew up with.
For the duration of London Craft Week, Mills has moved his workshop to the New Road Residence where he will be creating new pieces alongside a display of his handcrafted vessels and furniture. As well as finished works, guests are invited to observe his craft and to talk with him about his practice.
