Eva Rothschild
Furniture, Tapestry and Ceramics
Blue Projects presents the first exhibition of design works by internationally renowned artist Eva Rothschild. The project includes furniture, ceramics and the second tapestry created by the artist in collaboration with West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.
Developed out of the legacy of the modernist sculptural tradition, in particular the formal languages of such artists as Barbara Hepworth and Eva Hesse, Rothschild’s practice explores sculpture’s capacity to create bodily encounters through the colonisation of space. Her approach to mass, materiality and colour reflects a refined aesthetic sensibility that redeploys and subverts familiar sculptural formats.
For this presentation, Rothschild has translated her practice to more functional objects including daybeds, tables, benches and stools. Her arrangement of this furniture throughout the space resonates with the environment the artist created for her current sculptural exhibition entitled The Shrinking Universe for the Irish Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. The works on show at Blue Projects extend her continuing interest in the interaction between the body, the eye and the sculptural object.
Eva Rothschild (b.1971 in Dublin) lives and works in London. Rothschild has undertaken large-scale commissions for Tate Britain’s Duveen Galleries (2009) and Public Art Fund, New York (2011).
